Victoria Wood

Victoria Wood was born in 1953 just outside Bury, Lancashire, where she grew up in a remote house which she now discribes as "an open prison". Her family did not major in communication and they often took their meals separately.
She says "I did have an isolated life as a kid and I was miserable a lot of the time.

My mum would be in her room with her books and stuff, and my dad, who was an aspiring writer, would be in another, typing away. I'd be in mine with a bag of sweets, my piano and the telly. That's how we were."

After graduating in 1974, she went on to be in an ITV talent show, New Faces, which then led to appearances on That's Life and Start The Week. 2008 finds Victoria Wood working on her first venture into film making.

victoria wood the biography

Victoria Wood: "The Biography"
This biography is a warts-and-all portrait of a star who is much more complex than she has shown herself to be; whose private life - a mansion in Highgate and trappings to match - is very different to the lower middle class image she portrays as the substance of her show. From her isolated and bizarre childhood, to the explosion of her popularity in her work with Julie Walters, and with interviews with family and people who worked with Victoria in her early days, this book aims to reveal the true Victoria Wood.

proof, if any were needed, that after two decades at the top of her profession, Wood is one of a small handful of British comedians of either sex capable of filling the country's largest venues. For the consistently high quality of her penetrating observations of the mundane she has no equal.
T his performance has all the hallmarks of her microscopic examinations of life's perplexing minutiae and trivia. From her recent hysterectomy to Paul Daniels, from the NHS help line to wheelie bin covers, from Americans in Disneyworld to the ageism of catalogue mailing lists, nothing escapes Wood's attention.
